Individual Adolescent & Teen Therapy

It is normal for young people to need support in dealing with relationships, emotion regulation, family dynamics, academic concerns, self-esteem and identity development, and/or social stress. Adolescence/ teen years are some of the most complex years of our lives! (Personally, you couldn’t pay me enough to go back.) I absolutely love supporting teens to feel empowered to use their innate skills by meeting them where they’re at and providing a trusting, non-judgemental space to be seen and heard.

Parent Support

I take a family systems approach, meaning that I believe that individuals are best understood within the context of their whole family system. Parent sessions are especially helpful in developing tools to support the needs of your child and supporting you to be as present for them as possible. When I am supporting a young person in therapy, it can be beneficial to meet with you and/or you and your child together in the therapy space.

Therapy Modalities

I identify as a relational and eclectic therapist, in which I shift my approach and use a variety of therapeutic modalities to meet your unique needs.

MODALITIES USED:

Trauma therapy: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR), Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), Hakomi, Somatic Experiencing (SE)

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFIT, EFT, EFFT)

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT)

Trauma focused- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT)

Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT)

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR)

EMDR therapy is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and PTSD symptoms.

  • EMDR is a structured therapy that encourages the patient to focus briefly on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (e.g.,eye movements/ tapping), which is associated with a reduction in the vividness and intensity of emotion associated with the trauma memories. Ongoing research supports positive clinical outcomes, showing EMDR therapy as a helpful treatment for disorders such as anxiety, depression, OCD, chronic pain, addictions, and other distressing life experiences.

Somatic Experiencing (SE)

SE aims to resolve symptoms of stress, shock, and trauma that accumulate in our bodies and nervous systems.

  •  Trauma, from an SE lens, is focused on how it shows up in the nervous system and how that dysregulation impacts life. When we are stuck in patterns of fight, flight, or freeze, SE helps us release, recover, and become more resilient. It is a body-oriented therapeutic model.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)

DBT focuses on teaching people skills to manage intense emotions, cope with challenging situations, and improve their relationships.

  •  In addition to mindfulness skills, DBT teaches main skills including distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)

ART is a unique approach to psychotherapy, where the therapist guides the client to replace the negative images in the mind caused by trauma with positive images of the client’s choosing.

  • Both ART and EMDR use bilateral stimulation to facilitate visualization techniques focused on helping to reduce distress from traumatic memories. ART focuses more directly on how negative images are connected with emotional and physical reactions. ART draws on a variety of different techniques including Gestalt, Cognitive Behavior, Guided Imagery, EMDR and brief psycho-dynamic and exposure therapy.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT aims to develop and expand psychological flexibility. Psychological flexibility encompasses emotional openness and the ability to adapt your thoughts and behaviors to better align with your values and goals.

  • The theory behind ACT is that it is counterproductive to try to control painful emotions or psychological experiences; suppression of these feelings ultimately leads to more distress. ACT adopts the view that there are valid alternatives to trying to change the way you think, and these include mindful behavior, attention to personal values, and commitment to action.

Trauma- Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT)

Cognitive behavioral techniques are used to help modify distorted or unhelpful thinking and negative reactions and behaviors.

  • Learning to challenge intrusive thoughts can help clients to reorganize their thinking in a healthier and happier way.

Hakomi

Hakomi is a gentle yet powerful experiential psychotherapy that uses mindfulness and somatic interventions to heal attachment wounds and developmental trauma.

  • Clients learn to cultivate a compassionate, self-observing presence where gestures, tensions, voice tone, facial expressions, and other “somatic indicators” become routes to the formative experiences we call Core Material. The healing relationship is central to Hakomi as attachment issues are often vital elements of core material.

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

EFT  is a humanistic, evidence-based approach to psychotherapy, drawing primarily from attachment theory to facilitate the creation of secure, vibrant connection with self and others.

  • Rooted in the science of emotions and attachment, EFT helps clients identify and transform the negative processing and interaction patterns that create distress. It’s effective in treating individuals (EFIT), couples (EFCT), and families (EFFT), addressing a wide range of issues from relationship distress to individual anxiety and trauma.

Compassion- Focused Therapy (CFT)

CFT is a therapeutic approach that aims to help those who struggle with shame and self-criticism.

  • CFT teaches clients to cultivate the skills of self-compassion and other-oriented compassion, which are thought to help regulate mood and lead to feelings of safety, self-acceptance, and comfort.
